A Brief History: From NCAC to ACECQA
For many years, Australian childcare accreditation was managed by the National Childcare Accreditation Council (NCAC), which oversaw quality assurance for long day care, family day care and outside school hours care services. In 2012, the NCAC was replaced by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority – known as ACECQA – as part of a national reform to standardise early childhood quality across all states and territories.
ACECQA introduced the National Quality Framework (NQF), which remains the cornerstone of childcare accreditation in Australia today. If you encounter references to the NCAC in older documentation, it is simply the predecessor to the current system.
What Is Childcare Accreditation Under the NQF?
Under the National Quality Framework, accreditation is embedded in a continuous quality improvement process rather than a one-off certification. Every approved childcare service in Australia is assessed and rated against the National Quality Standard (NQS) – a set of seven Quality Areas covering everything from educational programming to governance and leadership.
The five possible ratings are:
- Excellent (awarded separately by ACECQA)
- Exceeding National Quality Standard
- Meeting National Quality Standard
- Working Towards National Quality Standard
- Significant Improvement Required
Most services aim to achieve Meeting NQS as their baseline, with many striving toward Exceeding. Achieving a strong rating signals to families, staff and the community that your centre meets rigorous childcare accreditation standards.

What a Childcare Accreditation Checklist Should Cover

- Health, safety and risk management procedures
- Physical environment setup and access to outdoor learning
